A Nightmare On Elm Street (Remake).

I have been a Nightmare On Elm Street fan since my early childhood. I remember at the tender age of 8 or 9 years old staying up late on a Friday night to watch the original on Cable TV, anxious to see what it was about. I was not disapointed when it finally hit 11pm and the movie opened with Freddy building his glove. I became intriuged by Freddy the moment I saw him and he has been my favourite bad guy ever since.

I was somewhat wary when I heard that for this remake they were not casting Robert Englund. I wondered "How can they have a Freddy movie without the original Freddy?". I am gonna be honest and say that I am still not too happy about them ditching Robert but the new guy (Jackie Earle Haley) was not too bad. He is a lot more serious than the previous Freddy and doesn't really beat about the bush when it comes to exacting his revenge.

Overall the movie is rather different to the 1984 original. In this movie Freddy is a local Gardener who is trusted to look after the neighbourhood kids. All the kids seem to get on really well with him until he starts taking them to his "Magic Cave". After this event Freddy is chased out of town and burned alive by the Parents of the children he took advantage of. Years later he begins to return in their dreams yet no one seems to be able to remember who he is until it is too late. Freddy seeks about getting his revenge on the children who told on him and one by one the bodies begin to pile up.

Overall I think I will give this remake a 7/10. I was honestly expecting it to be in the same vein as the Friday 13th remake (Bloody Awful) and destroy any remainig respect for the movie series. Instead it was an interesting watch with plenty of good scenes. My only real problem with the movie overall was the casting. Not that the acting was sub par but the actors/actresses hired to play the part of the teenagers were just too damn old! Some of them looked easily late 20's, approaching 30! Aside from this little annoyance I say that this is one of the better horror remakes of our generation and just hope that if there is a sequel they put the same amount of thought into it as they did this one.

Until next time...
